Yang Shaobin(1963 Hebei) is an internationally recognized painter best-known for his red-colored portraits of ghastly, ghostly,
deformed or sinister creatures. In the 1980s, Yang was part of the Beijing artists community that included Fang Lijun and Yue
Minjun. His work was selected in 1999 for the Venice Biennale. Influenced by Francis Bacon and Arnulf Rainer, his images are
popular in Europe, and he says they are often created to elicit discomfort or painful feelings from the viewer. And
in a more recent work, he has created portaits related to coal mining -- images of the bleak world of coal mining.
He lives and works in Beijing.
